Licensing and Credentialing: Requirements

Licensing:

To practise medicine in the NWT all physicians must be licensed by the Medical Registration Committee of the Northwest Territories.

Family Physicians must have completed a 2 year residency training program and be eligible for a license in a Canadian province.

Specialists require certification by the Royal College and a license in a Canadian province.

Credentialing:

Physicians are credentialed and appointed to the medical staff to obtain privileges to work in the hospital and/or clinics. That process occurs through the Territorial Credentials Committee which completes this process on behalf of the entire Northwest Territories.

Tip:

Information is not shared between the Licensing and Credentialing bodies. The offices are not in close physical proximity and are completely separate entities. A tip to make an application more smooth is to complete the application packages simultaneously as they sometimes require similar information and it is more efficient to do them at one time.
